Despite having just wrapped a $300 million expansion, growth is still at the forefront of Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown CEO Shubhada Jagasia’s mind.

While official plans are not yet public, Jagasia said the hospital system has already identified areas of need and is working to determine how to move forward.

“We have a growing city,” Jagasia said. “Whatever we can do, whatever we need to focus on … we’ll do well.”

Saint Thomas Midtown is Middle Tennessee’s fifth-largest hospital, according to Nashville Business Journal research, with 491 beds and $473 million in revenue in 2020.

The hospital system recently wrapped construction on its $300 million campus expansion, which broke ground in 2020. The plan included construction of a $48 million rehab hospital, a new $90 million surgery and critical care tower, a medical office building, a spine institute and a new women’s services facility. Ascension also opened a donor care unit.

When it comes to future growth, Jagasia said the hospital system focuses on creating foundations and then growing them. She said they’ve seen success with this in their cancer unit and partnership with Tennessee Oncology.

Physical expansion isn’t the only growth area Saint Thomas Midtown is looking into: Jagasia said the hospital is in the research phase to see how to use artificial intelligence to streamline certain aspects of daily work.

“We are engaging with a lot of AI to see how we can incorporate electronic records and reduce some of the administrative burden,” Jagasia said. “We are in the process of understanding what each company offers.”

In August, HCA Healthcare Inc. expanded its partnership with Google Cloud to improve nurse and physician workflow using AI.
